Driving south today, we decided to give Wick a miss other than a quick stock up at Tesco. Got cheap(ish) diesel there too – no queues at all. Think the Scots have maybe been a bit more sensible about the storm in a teacup!

Drove out to the coast and back on ourselves a bit to see Castle Sinclair Girnigoe. It was sooo cold this morning – a really icy breeze as we walked along the path. It was a proper old ruin of a castle, that had stood for a very long time, but without the props and scaffold, I don’t think it would last much longer.
Further down the coast we stopped at the other extreme – Dunrobin Castle and Gardens. We thought it looked more French than Scottish with its fancy turrets and ornamental gardens.

I wasn’t keen on the stags heads inside with plaques proudly proclaiming who’d killed them. The falconry thing wasn’t my bag either – beautiful birds, but I hate seeing them tethered. It had warmed up though, and was bright and sunny, so we enjoyed the gardens.
Turning inland, we drove up to the Falls of Shin. Along the way we’ve passed signs for deer, wild goats, red squirrels and otters! Didn’t see any of the above, but once we got to the waterfall, we did see leaping salmon. I was amazed; every few minutes one made a suicidal leap up the rocks, usually unsuccessful, but a couple made it. They’re mad those fish!
