Deciding to give Chalcis a miss, we rejoined the mainland this morning and headed south towards Cape Sounio – the southern tip of Attica. We tried to do it toll free, but gave up and got on the motorway after several potholes.
Standing high on a promontory, the remains of the Temple of Poseidon came into view. What an amazing structure – so old! 5th century BC.

We walked all around it in the strongest, blustery wind we’ve experienced this trip.
Disappointing to see a ten year old girl climbing on the ruins for a ‘model’ pose photograph, after all the signs saying please do not climb on the structure. Her Dad seemed shocked when a member of staff came out and blew a whistle at her. 🙄
Further round we watched a woman blatantly loading rocks into her bag – unbelievable.
The temple of Athena further down was just remains of the foundations – always find it far more difficult to visualise stuff when it’s just at ground level.
Drove down to flatter ground for lunch, but then realised we were in a dust bowl of a car park when a load of grit blew in through the kitchen window.

Carried on a bit round a beautiful rugged coast with many deserted beaches and free parking spots. Spoilt for choice, we drove up and down twice before settling on a perfect spot by a beach.

The scenery down here is quite different to what we’ve seen over the last week or so. Almost barren looking in places, quite rocky, with white villages and a few palm trees. An unusual little church that we couldn’t get to, and then a tiny white chapel by the sea added to this afternoon’s explorations.
Had a swim and then sat in the early evening sunshine.
