Pelting down with rain this morning so we abandoned the idea of walking into Augsburg and got a few miles done on the motorway. Tried again around Ulm as it sounded like an interesting place but all we did was get stuck in a traffic jam and the heavens opened again.

We needed to get across Germany anyway, as we’re hoping this very expensive tank of diesel we’ve bought will last until we reach Luxembourg.

Had enough by late afternoon and I found a great Park4Night spot in Saarlouis. It looked almost like a campsite with little hedges separating the bays, then we realised it was half full of caravans with all their stuff outside – them ‘proper travellers’ 😬

We moved on. Found a nice spot by a nature reserve in Dillingen and went straight out for a walk around the lake. It was full of wildlife, so after we’d done a lap we came back to the van and picked up Guy’s tripod and zoom lens.

Joined an nice old German man in a bird hide, who didn’t speak any English, and any German I did know from school seems to have evaporated from my brain. Guy resorted to Google translate and that helped a bit. Anyway, he had an amazing telescope thing and kept showing us where things were.

Pleased to report that we’ve seen our first kingfisher, several huge herons and best of all, a beaver!

The photo’s are a bit grainy – obviously another kind of lens is needed. Unfortunately Santa has already bought us diesel this year!
