We arrived in Magnan yesterday afternoon for an overnight stay with Guy’s parents. We had visited three different supermarkets along the way, mainly to make sure we were stocked up with Spanish goodies and cheap diesel.
The problem with the Carrefour hypermarket just near the border at Irun, was that they have a single file queueing system for the tills and you go to the number called out when you reach the front of the queue.
Had it been Spanish, we might have had a chance with numbers 1-11 but Basque??? I’d have been having a meltdown on my own, but because we were both there, it was just funny!
The cheesecake from La Viña was a big hit with the senior Bramleys and we were pleased we’d kept it out of the fridge as advised.

A few maintenance jobs for Guy this morning, then we left mid afternoon and tried yet another different route out of the Landes region with its many chicanes and mini roundabouts.
Success! Long straight roads – the driver stayed cool!
As we were out towards the west coast we decided to head for Mimizan Plage, not expecting it still to be packed with holidaymakers. Overnight parking is not allowed so we just drove up to some very sandy beach parking so that we could have a walk. It’s been a beautiful day (19°C). The beach was vast and the sea provided entertainment with a few ‘would be’ surfers.
When we came to leave, we realised that the way we came in was ‘one way’ and the only way out had a height barrier. As we were reversing out a French woman came to tell Guy that we ‘shouldn’t be in this car park’. He explained that there were no signs or height barrier on the way in. She then continued to protest, even though she was just passing by on foot …little did she know, I’d packed his ‘angry eyes’ 👀, so she walked away rather abruptly.
Shortly afterwards, the intrepid Monsieur Bramley somehow drove around the height barrier on a walking path at warp speed and almost forgot to pick the wife up! 🤣
Parked for the night a bit further north, somewhere near Sainte-Eulalie, by a beautiful lake. €7 with services, park where you like…
All is well that ends well.
