Continuing with the quest to cover every mountain pass in Europe 🙄, we carried on north crossing the border again and landed in St Moritz. Parked about a mile out of town and we were out of breath the minute we started walking uphill! This altitude thing has a lot to answer for. Not a great place in our opinion; some grand hotels mixed up with 70’s concrete stuff and ridiculously expensive designer shops. It was a bit like a ghost town but can imagine it’s rammed once the snow comes.

A few more mountain passes after lunch, then we came into Livigno.

We couldn’t understand why there were customs until we happened upon diesel at 79 centimes. Squeezed as much as we could into the tank then Guy went in to pay. He came out with a bottle of Amaretto…it’s all duty free 🕺😂 It turns out that Livigno enjoys a special tax status which dates back to the 16th century. The main reason being, that it’s so difficult to get to – especially when the snow comes.

What a contrast to St Moritz – this place is buzzing. Not sure what everyone is doing here out of season apart from eating, drinking and buying perfume, sunglasses and booze! Dragged our exhausted selves through the town and back. Could do with new sunglasses as mine are scratched, but even duty free, the stuff here is way out of our price range. Got back to the van just as the rain started again, but we can see that it’s fell as snow on the mountains around us. Get the snow chains out….
