We had a quiet nights sleep last night parked on the causeway to this rocky island. It’s just like Gibraltar from a distance and the town is completely hidden from view until you reach the far end of the rock, then once through an entrance gate you’re suddenly into the medieval narrow streets.

Monemvasiá is divided into a lower town with a main street full of little shops, cafes and restaurants and then an upper town which is mainly ruins apart from the church.

Only idiots walk up to the upper town in the nearly midday sun. We arrived at the top of the steps as two puddles of sweat. I was pleased to see that quite a few other people did too though.

The views over the rooftops and churches were brilliant and the ruins just go on for ever – all across the top of the rock.

Coming back down the rocky path was an issue for me as all the cobbles were worn smooth causing more than a few Bambi moments. One lady came down barefoot to stop herself from slipping.

Made it back to the van for lunch but only just. 😬

Drove a mile or so back up the coast in the afternoon so that we could park by a beach and have a swim. There seems to be a whole community of motorhomes set up here and it doesn’t look like it’s just for one night either.

Cooked our paella outside thus issuing an invitation to every fly, wasp and mozzie for miles around to come and join us. 😬😂
