Glad we’d planned to leave the campsite this morning as our new German neighbour with an interesting mullet haircut mentioned the word Kalashnikov twice in two very brief conversations 😬- he even likened the clicking of Guys camera to one!
The ramp uphill out of the campsite was so steep, it was almost a spectator sport for the inmates. No wheel spins for Guy = 5*effort.
We called first at the beautiful town of Nafplio, just a few km away. It seemed to have everything going for it. Two fortresses, shiny paved streets, an old town with little shops and a harbour…lovely.
Following the spectacular coastline, we drove further south stopping by a beach for lunch but it felt too hot to get out of the van!
Eventually we reached the town of Leonidhio which is surrounded by massive ochre cliffs – very different scenery, and after checking out its picturesque little beach and port at Plaka, we turned inland.
A very long and winding road climbed steadily through the Dhafnion Gorge. At one point we saw a monastery which seemed to be up in the clouds, ten minutes later we were passing its carpark!

The road was generally good but a bit difficult through the odd little town or village.
By the time we reached our destination, which is Monemvasia we’d definitely had enough. We’ll explore this place tomorrow as it’s past wine o clock.
