Dimitrios Shipwreck

Instead of going further south, we cut across to the west today which has brought us on to the Mani Peninsula of the Peloponnese.

It’s different again scenery wise and very beautiful so far.

We called first at the lovely white sand Glyfada beach, after seeing an interesting shipwreck from the road above. It was baking hot and motorhomes had all but taken over the beach car park. We are so glad we stopped; this wreck from 1981 was amazing to see. Close up you could see inside and it looked like a rusting rib cage.

Drove on a couple of miles to the very scenic town of Gytheio – very pretty, with pastel coloured houses it almost looks Venetian. We parked on another tiny island attached by a causeway. Had to breathe in as we drove along said causeway or we wouldn’t have made it! Not much on the actual island, other than a lighthouse, but the town itself was lovely.

We carried on along the coast a little way then pulled in at Vathy beach for cooling swim and dinner outside. It seems we can park at virtually every beach we come to now that the holiday season is nearly done.
