It was a bit too warm last night – leaving the heating on at 15c was a bit much, but given the -9 forecast outside, we just wanted to stay warm.

It was -4 this morning when we set off for the proper path up to the Cirque. I was hoping to wait for it to warm up a bit first, but the excitable one was suited and booted and had already made a flask of coffee. We called at the corner shop for pain au chocolates en route and the thought of them kept me going through the pain of finger freezing 😂🥶

Following a different path, it was uphill most of the way and much harder than yesterday. We made it up to the Hotel du Cirque and then carried on a bit further to see the waterfall, which was frozen solid.

Back down much faster than we came up and the sun came out properly making everything sparkle.

After bacon & eggs (well, Serrano ham), it was already gone 2pm before we set off down the road.

Although, we were just a couple of miles from the Spanish border there’s no way through from Gavarnie, and due to road closures, we had to drive all the way back down to Lourdes before heading into the mountains again.

The road was open to the Col du Pourtalet, but there was still quite a lot of snow about. I’ve compared it to our photos from February last year and there’s definitely more snow today. It seemed like a very long drive but some amazing scenery all the way. The driver must be tired as I was let loose with the prawn stir fry…😂🙄😉
