Had a couple of quiet days in Magnan visiting Guy’s parents, then this morning we set off towards the Pyrenees, first through Tarbes, then Lourdes. There didn’t seem to be a lot of snow on the mountains at first but it gradually increased as we climbed up through Luz-St-Sauveur. The road was completely cleared though – lucky, considering the giant icicles hanging off the rocks at the side!
Parked up in the mostly closed village of Gavarnie. It was super cold when we set off to see the cirque after lunch. I was considering turning round after ten minutes as my finger ends were dropping off and our faces were frozen. Gradually, we warmed up as we followed the snowshoe trail along the river towards the rock walls. The sun came out and for a while it was like a winter wonderland. Sadly, the path petered out into nothing and we had to turn around – must’ve taken a wrong turn somewhere. There was a surprising amount of people around though, considering how closed the village seemed to be.
On the way back, we saw what we think is the right path, but decided it was too late in the day. Might give it a whirl tomorrow if we survive the -8 temperatures tonight. 😂🥶❄️Just been joined by three other motorhomes in the car park …seems a bit late in the day to be coming up here but they’re probably planning an early start.
