Well, I knew we had a few miles to cover, but it’s been hard going for the last few hours today.
Warm and sunny this morning and the first stop was lovely Lidl! Very cheap week’s shopping, I have to say.
At the border with Hungary quite soon after, we got stamped back into the Schengen zone …Start the clock!
Every time we drive through Hungary, certainly on the motorways, it bores us rigid! Today was no exception. It’s completely flat – just fields and nothing to see. You start to get the ‘thousand mile stare’ after about ten. 😂
We were heading for Bratislava which is just over the border in Slovakia. This meant driving right across Hungary from one side to the other with the Budapest ring road providing the only entertainment in the middle.
Approaching the Slovakian border, we suddenly thought about vignettes (a little late as usual) but decided to avoid the big roads as we won’t be in the country for long. Trouble was, due to a navigational error, we zoomed straight in on the motorway – cue panic input of card details on some dodgy Slovak vignette website.
Once in Bratislava, Guy remembered where we’d parked about five years ago and put a pin on Google maps. Somewhere along the way it changed the route by itself and we did a tour of unsuitable carparks. Not easy in a big city. We drove into one and the attendant came running after us and said “Do you really want to stay? You’ll be charged as a coach and it’s very, very, expensive”.
“Err, no, we’ll be off then.”
Had to give up, it was already 5pm ish and we’d gained an hour crossing a time zone. Just outside the the city, we’ve found a huge flat parking next to the Danube at Devin Castle – thank God. Not even a walk to be had though, it’s now tipping it down.
