All the way back up the hills this morning and then heading west towards this beautiful area. What a road though! It went on forever, climbing upwards through little villages and towns, non stop bends and panoramic views all the way. By the time we landed in Pampaneira though, we’d more than had enough.
Pampaneira is the first of three whitewashed villages that cling to the side of the vast Poqueira Gorge which cuts deep into the Sierra Nevada. We had lunch and decided to walk up the road to other two villages. It was hard going with not much pavement and we got very hot and bothered, not least because half the drivers coming down the twisty mountain road were busy on their phones! 🙄

We reached the next village, Bubión, about 4km away and then carried on up to Capileira, where the road ends and you’re almost at the snow line. Had a little walk around and temped by a restaurant barbecuing the most amazing looking steak, but we were full of Spanish omelette from lunchtime! 😬

Walking back down the road, we detoured into Bubión and found a direct path back to Pampaneira..cutting out all the bends in the road and 3km shorter! It was so very steep though and kind of cobbled most of the way leaving our toes feeling like they’d been hammered.

Reaching the town, we decided to stop for a drink as we knew we’d have to climb back up to where the motorhome was parked. Several croquetas and empanadas later, it seems we’ve just had dinner – Oops!
