Heavy rain in the night, but semi-dry this morning. Somehow a cleaning day turned into a trip to Cadiz 🙄

Not our boat!

Went to get the boat at midday only to find it had been cancelled and replaced with a hot coach with no air con. When two men got on dressed as women, we started to wonder if it was carnival week, although it’s always earlier in the year when we’ve been before.

We arrived to the madness of Cádiz carnival, except it wasn’t! That was 27th Feb to 9th March. The gist of it we could get from a waitress was ‘No, this is not carnival, but it’s kind of a separate one that we have a week later’! They just love to party here so much and this is now the third time we’ve had the privilege to be in the thick of it.

I can’t begin to describe the level of fancy dress – sometimes planned a whole year ahead. There are no half measures. Groups of people in the same mad outfits stand on street corners and sing their hearts out – usually accompanied by a few stringed instruments and a drum. Everyone is so happy!
We sat down for lunch in the warm sunshine and got a bit carried away with the calamari and croquetas. Good job we’ve covered eight miles today!

Walked out past the cathedral to the outside edge of town – the view is amazing, and continues to surprise all the way around the top edge of the promontory.

There are palm trees everywhere, lovely beaches and then a botanical park full of amazing trees and parakeets.

I think we’ve been reminded today why Cádiz is one of our favourite cities…it will always be special to us anyway, as it was the place we headed for on our first ever motorhome trip in November 2017.
Got rained on walking back through El Puerto but great end to the day when we saw two Hoopoes.

Cádiz – Not Carnival but seems like it to us! 16/3/25
