A cross country route for us today, back to the blue town of Chefchaouen.
We chose a ‘no tolls’ route thinking it would be more interesting and thankfully, the road surfaces were good for most of the way. Had to go south first in order to pick up the road east, which meant going through the large town of Ksar el Kebir. All was going well until we hit a road closure causing us to have to run the gauntlet of several busy shopping streets. As usual, stuff happening everywhere, suicidal pedestrians, scooters, bikes, trucks laden with goods, donkeys, sheep ..it’s exhausting! 🤣

Once on the road east, it was all a lot easier as we drove up through the lush green countryside into the Jebala Mountains. Wildflowers are everywhere, it is so beautiful in places. Just a few villages to contend with, where feral kids pop out from nowhere and try to flag us down. I saw one lad pick up a big stone and throw it at a woman who was buying something from a roadside stall – nice!

We stopped for lunch overlooking the Barrage Oued El Makhazine – amazing view. The starving dogs had the rest of the Moroccan Winalot between them, which hopefully, tasted better than the discarded rubbish they were picking through.

Arriving at Chefchaouen from the south, we somehow picked up the wrong road to the campsite which goes through the town, not ideal, but managed to get back on track.
We’ve had a walk down into the town and it seems really busy compared to when we came in March. Found a terrace cafe for a view over the rooftops, although I don’t think the stairs up to it would pass a safety test in the UK.

Lots of hungry dogs around here too – think another bag of Winalot will be on the shopping list!
