Short drive today up to Asilah. I think we’re only about 50km below Tangier now, although it’s not on our hit list.
Another whitewashed little seaside town, this one Portuguese in origin, but so much cleaner than Larache.
Pulled into a tiny campsite that has a little gate leading directly to the beach. As we walked through said gate, I think we were both expecting a scruffy, litter strewn stretch of sand but lo and behold, a huge white, spotless promenade with an almost clean beach the other side.

The little medina was lovely too, full of bits of art work and murals on the blinding white walls. Stone ramparts and towers complete the outside edge with some good views out to sea. It’s noticeably more touristy here due to its proximity to Tangier, but doesn’t feel overrun.

We wandered up to the market on Avenue Moulay Ismail, which at first had the usual ‘Sports Direct’ style rubbish for sale but then evolved into a nice vegetable market. Another bagful! This time, we got half a kilo of strawberries too for about 40p.

One of the fish stalls at the top seemed to be losing its grip on its freshness, causing Guy to turn green. Didn’t much fancy the swordfish head either!

We bought so much, had to bring it back to the van. Got it washed, had a cup of tea, then couldn’t be bothered to walk back in, so had half an hour on the beach instead.
Just tucking in to the strawberries after dinner, when a man came round selling little cakes and pastries his wife makes. We said no at first, then quickly caved in when he said five for £1.60! He looked immaculate in his white hat and apron, seemed to speak five different languages too.
He gave us six in the end and we’ve somehow inhaled them 🙄- we’ll have to get a bigger van soon!
