After much thought, we decided to give Lisbon a miss this time. We needed a campsite and they are very few and far between with public transport not running as normal due to Mardi Gras. We found a ‘safe’ car park but as Lisbon was where we were broken into in 2020, we just didn’t feel happy leaving the van.
The two sections of toll roads we used today came to £19, so we got back on the A roads after we’d negotiated the city. I think because of road closures, we crossed the Tagus River estuary on the Vasco de Gama bridge…one of the longest in Europe. It seemed to go on forever.
Stopped for lunch in Alcacer do Sal, normally a lively, picturesque riverside town. Today, there’s a big clear up operation underway after the severe flooding the community has suffered in recent weeks. So many heaps of ruined furniture in front of the cafés – there’s not much time really to put everything back together before the summer season. The river looks like it’s gone back to normal level so hopefully the worst of it is over – you can tell exactly where it’s been though.
We carried on south to Costa do Vizir Camping in Porto Novo. We’ve stayed here before and it’s quite a nice campsite – even won an Acsi award last year!
Porto Novo has a lovely coastline if I remember rightly but even more important at the moment, it has four lovely washing machines!
