Although we stayed in a lovely place last night, the ‘drum & bass’ gang turned up at 3am and had an outdoor party – why do they never play anything decent? 😂
Feeling a bit sluggish, we set off for the local Lidl as we thought Poland might be cheaper than Lithuania…it is. Then on to a trigpoint at Wisztyniec…I think. It was cold and rainy and apparently, temperatures drop as low as -26! There is a monument here where three countries meet – Poland, Russia and Lithuania. I tried to stand in all three countries at once then read the sign afterwards which said “don’t stand or take photos in Russia’s bit’ – if we suddenly disappear…
Best option, leave the country and head for Lithuania. Things instantly changed. Everywhere looked a bit scruffier and it was like driving across a prairie – wheat and corn fields all the way to Kaunas. I couldn’t believe the time when I looked at the clock and Guy made some remark about me faffing around in Lidl. Well, if you take time to look at stuff you don’t buy a bag full of cucumbers instead of courgettes like someone did last week!! Not long afterwards, I realised my watch had a different time to my phone – yes, we had lost an hour! Now 2 hours difference from UK.
Kaunas is quite nice, with a castle and an old town full of bars and cafes. The cathedral was pretty ornate inside but there was a service on, so no photographs. I tried a glass of the local white wine which tasted ok, until a bloke at the bar said that it wasn’t made with grapes….oh!
Now we’ve got the heating on…in July🤭- this doesn’t bode well considering we have to go much further north yet.
