Not a very exciting start to the day – a bit of cleaning? Oh, ok…the mini vacuum cleaner still smells reassuringly of Rufus 😬
Made our way to the middle of nowhere after to have a look around Hitler’s bunker – the Wolf’s Lair. Not just one bunker, but a whole complex of them in the woods…it was huge. Some of the walls up to 7 metres thick; he certainly meant surviving. Most of the bunkers were full of families ignoring the ‘danger – do not enter’ signs.

We got stopped and interviewed on our thoughts on the place by some students who were making a documentary. It was only after we’d answered lots of questions that they told us they were German, not Polish. Luckily, we hadn’t said anything about the bombing of our chip shop! 😂
Drove on mid afternoon to get a little closer to Lithuania. Our first stretch of bad road – very narrow and rutted, turning into cobbles at one point. Guy thought he was in the Paris-Roubaix! Lots of lakes around here and storks nesting everywhere. However such big birds balance up there I’ll never know.

We parked up for the night in a fab picnic spot that looks like it’s had tons of EU investment.
As it was only 4:30 ish we decided to walk along the lake to see the Russian border. What a surreal experience, to think we’ve driven here! So funny too, as we came to the barrier, a couple of border guards appeared from nowhere. Guy asked if he could take their photo but it was a definite no!
We could take photos of the sign but not the barrier…so who did this???
