Brasov old town

Bit of a noisy night left both of us worse for wear. It was an hours walk into Brasov and I’d read that most people who’d parked here had used Bolt to get into town. I downloaded the app and we were so impressed. Got a taxi in two minutes, whisked into the old town, driver told us all the best places to go and charged us the equivalent of €3!

Brasov was really lovely and in such a beautiful setting, surrounded by the southern Carpathian Mountains. The Council Square in the old town was teeming with life. Cobbled streets, cafes and colourful baroque buildings down every road leading off it. We didn’t know where to look first! It’s still a bit crumbly and graffitied in places but I think it adds to its atmosphere.

We walked up some very steep steps (resuscitation needed) to the fifteenth century white watchtower (Turnul Alb) for amazing views of the city before ‘Bolting’ back to the van.

Needed to find some services, and the only ones seemed to be on a nearby motorway, so we headed there first before making our way to Bran to see Dracula’s castle 😬

Bran Castle

I’d read that it was a busy place and very touristy, but we weren’t really prepared for the traffic jam to start miles outside the centre. There were people everywhere, it was crazy! Our own fault really for bad timing again – Saturday!! Probably a little quieter in the week.

We just did a very slow drive by in the end, couldn’t face the queue and the crowds. I was quite happy just to see it from a distance – exactly like the Saturday night horror films minus the bats.

We’d planned to drive north up the Transalpina pass, but after asking around, we don’t think it’s open yet. Kind of solved a problem really, as we are running out of time. Instead, we’ve come up to Sighisoara in torrential rain.

The town looks stunning, just checking out the carpark for undesirables as we need a decent night’s sleep. 😂
