Siena – WOW!!!! What an amazing place – even more amazing was the fact that we found a place to park for free just 15 minutes walk from the centre. Stunned by the scallop shaped Campo. Guy went up the bell tower (Torre del Mangia)- 97 metres high! I stayed on the ground …I’m ‘off’ heights for a while. Thought I’d have a quick browse, but my retail aspirations were curtailed by the heavy rucksack Guy cleverly asked me to hold while he went climbing stairs. The camera stuff weighs so much …I have suggested a Kodak Disk on many occasions- fits neatly in a handbag! 😂 There was a really weird rainbow halo around the sun at lunchtime. In order to capture it on film, the photographer lay on his back in the middle of the internal courtyard of the Palazzo Pubblico – strange looks all round.
The Duomo was even better than the one in Orvieto – beautiful pastel colours. I think we could easily spend a weekend here and still have stuff to see, but couldn’t leave Rufus for too long. Back to the wan with throbbing feet, we headed north towards Florence. We’ve stopped just a little way up in the Chianti region at a little town called Castellina in Chianti. Parked up just in time for a thunderstorm. Walked into the town after dinner with Rufus. It was really odd to hear lots of English voices and see menus written in English. Apparently, the area has been dubbed Chiantishire as so many people have moved over here to live – you can see why!
