Hallstatt

Up quite early and it felt pretty cold. 8°C outside. Jacket, hat, gloves and walking boots for me ☹️- what a contrast to a few days ago!

We set off on the path around the lake and it took us about 40 minutes to reach the town. It was already rammed with people of all nationalities. I can understand the attraction here ..it is a beautiful old town on a lake, but there are scores of similar places around Europe that aren’t overrun like Hallstatt. I think it’s just too small for the amount of tourism it draws in. We wandered through to the far side, looking at the timber houses, dodging selfie sticks and wannabe models.

By the time we walked back to the van, all the carparks were full again! Glad to escape really, we made our way towards Saltzburg.

Had to stop for bread but someone inadvertently purchased two giant cinnamon whirls as well.

We were very lucky to be able to park on a wide street up by the castle in Saltzburg. This lovely, upmarket city is a great place to wander round with its pastel coloured buildings and beautiful squares. Lots of quirky little shops and alleyways running between the main streets, but all the big designers are here too and they’d all got customers.

We walked across the river and up to the Mirabell Palace and park. Everything looked different to how I remembered it, but I think last time we visited, we came in from a totally different angle.

Funny, but on our way in to the old town, we saw two men playing a giant game of outdoor chess complete with audience, so no pressure! On our return, the same two men were still at it, with what looked like the same audience!

Sadly, we were only allowed to stay three hours in our parking place so we’ve driven just out of the city and into Germany.
Police at the border again but no passport check this time.

Not so little Red Corvette
