We had to head back towards Meknes this morning as it seemed to have the only Carrefour with suitable parking. Luckily we skirted the top end of Fez to get out and it was much easier than yesterday’s drive in.
Got the essentials in the supermarket but couldn’t find the all important cave for wine. An assistant offered to look after our trolley while we were pointed in the direction of what looked like a fire door. Down a load of stairs to the basement where there’s a guard on duty and a bored looking girl on the till. Got our contraband then hung our heads in shame as we carried it back upstairs! 🤣
Motorways for the rest of the day to get us back onto the coast. They are super smooth toll roads and very cheap for the privilege of stress free driving. Still, the unexpected happens from time to time reminding us that we are in Morocco..
When we stopped for lunch, the service station was still under construction on our side of the carriageway, but there was still space to park with a few lorries. We opened the door onto the rubbish strewn field at the side, not realising it was the men’s toilet!🙄
A van pulled up with about eight young girls in, all nicely dressed, possibly English or German. The driver gets out and leads them all down the bank to cross the motorway, so they can reach the proper services on the other side!!
We were amazed they all came back alive!
Later on in the day, there was a glint of metal crossing the carriageway in the distance – it turned out to be a boy of about ten carrying what looked like a brand new and very sharp scythe over his shoulder. I’m so concerned, he could chop himself in half with one swing of that thing!
Thought we might stay at Moulay Bousselham where there’s a big lagoon …another bird watching location. Unfortunately, the roads were all dug up for miles again – I do think that they dig up more than they can chew at once! Cows in the road and eating out of upturned rubbish bins. In the middle of all this two men are desperately trying to get us to park for their couple of quid but we did a u turn.

Thought we’d parked on a campsite that isn’t a campsite in Larache but it turns out to be three miles out.
Oh well at least it should be a quiet night, but oh nooooo..there’s a wedding nearby.

Long Drive to Larache 3/5/25
