Left behind our lovely white beach which was almost totally deserted this morning. Sneaky fill up with water from a tap attached to the beach shower gives us a couple of days of freedom.

Kavala was a much bigger place than we anticipated – a city rather than a town. Managed to park up easily though and set off in the midday heat to explore the old town and the citadel.
Of course, it’s all uphill and we arrived at the top almost dissolved into two puddles! Huge sweeping views over the city and the Ottoman aqueduct made for a decent reward for our efforts.
Had lunch in the van before moving on to Halkidhiki, which is basically three prongs of land that extend into the north Aegean Sea.
The first peninsula coming from the east, Mount Athos, is totally out of bounds, well, for me at least, as it’s full of monasteries. Women and even female farm animals have been banned since 1060!! 🙄Even men need a permit.

So, anyway, we’ve driven down the second peninsula called Sithonia, which seems to have a very beautiful, if very busy, coastline. It’s also really green with pine forests and olive trees.
As the holiday season is still in full swing here, we’ve found it really difficult to park so Guy has driven much further than we wanted to today.

Now down by a small harbour near Sarti for the night. We can just about see Mount Athos across the water so I’ve given the monks a wave!
