Relatively quiet last night but still really hot to be in a tin box. The duvet got bagged up and put in the boot this morning.
Drove to Fethiye first, which was quite a surprise as it’s a huge place but everything is low rise. All quite clean and manicured on the sea front from what we saw.
Stopped at Migros supermarket along the way. It’s difficult to shop when you haven’t a clue what you’re looking at half the time. Fruit and vegetables fine (and cheap), virtually everything else is over processed and full of colours and flavours.
We stopped by a marina for lunch, but with full sun overhead, we had to move on. Decided to try and get to Ölüdeniz to see what all the fuss is about. No problem getting down there and parking but I don’t think we’ve ever seen so many people. Had to walk through the town first in order to get to the famous beach. Fake everything for sale here. Guy bought some Birkenstock sandals last night for about a tenner 🤣..we’re taking bets on how long they will last!
Saw fake Marks and Spencer, fake Asda and when I saw the Lidl sign, I was overjoyed, that is until we got close and realised it said IiDI 🙄😢

Ölüdeniz is known for its turquoise waters surrounding a spit of land with white beach on both sides. It should be so beautiful, but has been completely covered in sunbeds all the way around, including the blue lagoon area. You have to pay about £1 to get in, then all the beaches are private so you are obliged to rent a sunbed. None left today even if we’d wanted one! Managed a swim in the sea which is very clear and beautifully blue, with paragliders overhead, it was a nice afternoon – glad we’ve been, but wouldn’t go back unless it was the middle of winter.

Butterfly Valley next. Well, a viewpoint overlooking it at least. Had to drive up a steep winding road with a lot of impatient thrill seekers trying to get around the bends at the same time. It was a good view and the tiny beach down there looked pretty special.

After trying to reverse out onto a bend, we carried on up the road as that was our route south. I could see it was going to turn into a series of hairpin bends, but what we didn’t anticipate was the steepness. After about twenty minutes of white knuckle stuff, all in first gear, we decided to turn around! 😬

Ended up having to go all the way back to Fethiye, so we decided to park back at the marina for the night. Incredibly, the carpark has been invaded by wild boar – about twenty of them. It was such a spectacle. Think the restaurant owner here feeds them, and they return every night. We could hear them coming along the main road, stopping traffic in its tracks. At last, something to compete with Guy’s snoring! 💤

Ölüdeniz…it’s not like the brochures! 🤣 7/9/24
