Spent most of the day driving. The roads are good, but quite narrow which means I have to breathe in when a lorry goes past. There’s some serious tunnelage here too – today’s longest was 6.9km. We stopped for coffee on the edge of one of the fjords and could see fish jumping about in the water. One of the fishermen said they were Mackerel…he only seemed to catch one and it looked like there were hundreds. Maybe he was new. 😂
A couple more big bridges. The one below was particularly windy and when a lorry went past, I swear it nearly sucked the skin off my face. The husband driver was not impressed with my reaction.
Got to Narvik mid afternoon. Scene of many a battle with the Germans over the iron ore. The town itself looked quite grey and grim, as do most of the towns up here, so we decided to have a look around the war museum.
It was quite an eye opener, although really, mostly just stuff to read. Narvik was built over a century ago to handle the iron ore bought by train from the mines in Sweden. Hitler wanted it for making weapons and once the allies went off to fight on other fronts, the Germans took over.
Apart from a couple of bits of modern architecture, there was nothing left to see or do in Narvik, and it was freezing, so we made our way down the coast for somewhere nice to sleep. Parked on the edge of a fjord and we’ve just seen dolphins 🐬…amazing. We thought the first one was a whale, as they have been seen here, but dolphins will do for me! Photos haven’t come out sadly, but it’s true – honestly!
