Derwent water

Not really sure where we’ve been today, but I do know it’s been impossible to park. This evening, we’ve decided that the Lake District is probably better done by car 😬

It was a lovely quiet night on top of the Kirkstone Pass – so much so, we didn’t wake up till after nine. 😯

The Kirkstone

We started by going down the road to Ullswater which looked really nice, but we drove up and down the road at the side of it for ages and all the car parks were full. No room in the lay-bys either.

Trying to use mainly A roads, we somehow ended up in Keswick, but again, everywhere full. Fortunately, driving out along Derwent Water, we managed to squeeze in a car park for some woods and finally got some lunch. Had a lovely walk in to Keswick along the lake. It was busy, busy, busy but we liked it better than yesterday’s towns.

Back at the van, unsure what to do next or where to sleep, we headed out to the coast and slightly south to Whitehaven.

Really like it here – there’s strangely hardly anyone around. Got great parking on the edge of the harbour for £5.

Just been out for an evening walk and it’s a big place. A Georgian town with a huge harbour, jetties, and sea walls everywhere, plus a marina and a beach.

It was an important port in England in the old days, exporting coal and importing tobacco. Looks like it’s had quite a bit of renovation since the millennium, but I think the main employer now is the nuclear power plant down the road at Sellafield.

Tour of the Lakes …sort of!
