Ullapool was a bit of a let down in the grey drizzle. Parked up near Tesco with what seemed like a hundred other motorhomes. It felt wrong to us, like we were taking over the car park…couldn’t wait to escape. Not a lot open – feeling like we’ve missed a piece of Scottish news too, as all the restaurants seemed to be eat outside in the rain or takeaway. Was going to call in Boots but they were “closed for lunch”….closed for lunch? Feels like we’re back in sixties Britain.
In the end we settled for eating in the rain at the Seafood Shack. Six freshly cooked langoustines each, with bread and garlic butter. So nice it made the rain go away!

We didn’t plan to drive anywhere else today but decided to carry on in case there was a better place to spend my birthday around the corner.
Needed diesel so had to join the ‘crisis’ queue. The lady in the kiosk said they couldn’t believe how mad it was – they had loads of petrol and diesel but everyone panicking since they heard that a few stations were closed.

Got to Ardvreck Castle – or ‘remains of’ which was quite atmospheric sitting on the edge of Loch Assynt. Think we’ve missed a bit of scenery along the way as the cloud was really low.
Carried on then to Lochinver and arrived just as the sun started to break through. Seemed a much nicer place but still couldn’t find anywhere decent open where we could eat inside.
We came back to the van with artisan pies i.e. not Fray Bentos 😉 Warmed them up in the noisy oven – they were amazing! Feeling like a pair of baby elephants now.

Our parking ‘for motorhomes’ is still under construction. We’ve got heaps of sand and grit around us but been told it’s ok to park. Just hoping Bob the Builder doesn’t decide to put a Saturday shift in or it’ll be a mad scramble in the morning.
