We’ve driven into the Rias Baixas area today, apparently it’s where most Galicians spend their holidays, and with good reason.
For the most part of it, the scenery is stunning. Colourful little towns, pine and eucalyptus trees around the edges of rocky coves, pure white sand and clear blue sea.

We took a convoluted route around the coast, but then cut off one of the headlands so that we could get to the Isla de Arousa a bit quicker.

Joined to the mainland by a long road bridge, at first appearance we thought it would be flat and boring. Not many places to park, so Guy had to tackle the very narrow streets and somehow we ended up around the other side. It was so beautiful – a bit like Sardinia with its big smooth boulders around the beach. We walked for a little while but somehow in all this beauty, we managed to get ourselves stuck down a dead end at the back of a fish factory! 🙄😂

We wanted to stay on the island, but had zero food left in the fridge and tomorrow is Sunday (shops closed). Drove off in search of Lidl then carried on to Combarro.

This little seaside village is famous for having the most ‘hórreos’ in all Gallicia. Hórreos are stone granaries built on stilts – a lot of them date back to the eighteenth century. We’ve been seeing them everywhere for the last few days and wondered what they were – now we know! We thought Combarro was lovely …it had a few souvenir shops, but on the whole a very atmospheric place.

Meanwhile, back in our idyllic parking, a bar has tuned up for the Saturday night rave – although it sounds a bit more like the Macarena!
