Set off for Evora this morning. Called in at a small town called Alcacovas on the way to look at a big church….’cos we haven’t seen any of those for at least 24 hours. The locals all stared at us from their doorways as we walked up the street. We’re not sure if it’s just the strange furry dog they’re looking at or the fact that we’re dressed in shorts and t shirts (22 degrees) and they’ve got their coats and scarves on. Evora has a Roman temple and lots of old palaces but today the two important ones were under wraps undergoing restoration! We managed to find the Chapel of Bones though, where the walls and pillars are made entirely of human bones. Guy went in to take some photos – I opted to stay with Rufus. As we thought we’d seen enough by 4 ish, we decided to go and park at another site away from the city as we thought it might be quieter. On the way Guy suddenly decided to do a de-tour to see a stone circle that he’d seen a sign for. He thought it would be a couple of miles away, but it was many! In the end we were driving up a dirt track full of pot holes for about 5 kilometres…Rufus thought his teeth might fall out. It was starting to get dark and I wasn’t very amused, especially when husband suggested we stay there for the night. I was worried that some druidy type people might come and sacrifice a goat 🐐 or worse still, Rufus in the middle of the night.😦There were a lot of them (stones, not druids) but they weren’t anywhere near as big as I expected. Thought it best not to stand in the middle either in case I got beamed up by Zanussi! In the end we drove all the way back down in the dark and on to the original intended stopover site. Thing is, it’s really noisy …think we’re next to a trunk road. Maybe we should go back??
