Salema

After a quiet night in the Aldi car park, we made our way to São Vincent, the most westerly point in mainland Europe, which is just across the bay from Sagres. We parked up at the end of the promontory near what is reputed to be the most powerful lighthouse in Europe, then went for a walk across the cliffs. Guy immediately spotted a dolphin, then I saw another one, but they never really came up for long enough to get a decent photo.

It’s been a beautiful, sunny day. Still a cool breeze but 17°C in February is pretty good for us! A few unusual birds around as well to appeal to our twitching tendencies.

After lunch, we returned to one of our old haunts – Boca do Rio. We’ve stayed overnight here a few times but I think it got inundated with vans, some who stayed permanently. Consequently, the police now move people on or fine them as it is in a national park area. We parked for the afternoon and went for a walk up and over the cliffs to the beautiful little resort of Salema. This place must have been a tiny fishing village at one time – now the surrounding hills are full of white villas. We sat in a swish bar overlooking the shore, where one brave family jumped around in the wild waves. It almost felt like summer – not sure why I’m still wearing my school parka! 🤣
Continuing our tour of supermarket sleepovers, tonight we’re back in Vila da Bispo, but this time it’s Lidl!
