Rained so much in the night and we hadn’t realised we were parked under trees, so the noise was doubled. Not much sleep to be had! ☹️
Two stops on the way to Calais, one in Neufchâtel-en-Bray for Lidl and then at Abbeville for a hypermarket. Stocked up on coffee, which is still thankfully about half the price of the UK equivalent. Guy put some big sized bottles of beer in the trolley and the check out girl was sending them clattering through at warp speed, until one exploded! Glass and beer went absolutely everywhere and she was fuming! 🤣
In Calais, we parked at the motorhome site which had workmen all over it. Brilliant for us as we needed to go into town to post a letter, so at least we knew the van would be ok.
We’ve driven in to Calais to look at the clock on the hôtel de ville before, but never actually walked in. Surprisingly to us, Calais-Nord (or the old town) is almost on an island! There’s the remains of a citadel and a few brilliant statues around including one of Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle.

We walked out to the beach, where we were met with the strongest wind I’ve ever experienced. We couldn’t believe the ferries were still running! The sea was absolutely wild and the sand was flying around everywhere. We walked out on a long jetty – good that there were railings each side or I think we’d have been blown in, even after the Manchego and bread diet!

Walking back, between the apartments, we both suddenly had the sense that a man behind us was about to try something. We both turned around and he immediately changed course. I have a feeling he was thinking about grabbing the camera. Not a pleasant experience. In fact, I don’t think we’ll bother going into Calais again.
