Short drive this morning up to Carcassonne. It was very frosty first thing but turned into a beautiful sunny day.
We decided to pay to use the motorhome parking as it’s quite secure with barrier and cameras etc, plus only twenty minutes walk from the city walls.
The Cité really is like a fairy tale medieval town and it was really nice to see it in the winter without the crowds. We were almost immediately sucked into a restaurant by the smell of cassoulet and although it was a good value lunch, we had to keep our coats on as it was freezing in there. Customers took turns to close the door after the waitress walked out with empty plates 😂
Anyway, now fortified with a glass of rough red, we went to explore the fortifications. Did the whole thing today including the Château Comtal and the ramparts. I think we’ve done a bit of it in the past many years ago, but definitely worth the money.
Once we’d covered every corner we went down to the ville basse or lower town which was also quite nice. Guy was in search of a barber but settled for a hairdresser. After a quick short, back and sides the kind lady wanted €17 in cash. Cash??? We’d only got €10, so I had to stay as a deposit whilst Monsieur Bramley went in search of the nearest cash machine. It promptly charged €5 for withdrawing €10….so that’s why we don’t bother with cash unless we really have to.

Staggered back to the van early evening – think we’ve walked about seven miles but it feels more like twenty. Must be the cobbles!
