11-13 February 2023

Had a lovely weekend visiting our friends Gill and Karl in the village of Siran. We gave them a few hours grace first on Saturday, whilst we visited Homps to see the Canal du Midi. Fat chance – it had been drained! The boats looked so strange sitting in the mud. Nevertheless, it was a glorious, sunny day, made even better once we got to Siran, with good company, food and too much wine!

Had a walk at Caunes Minervois on Sunday to see the red marble quarry – we’re still not sure if we took the right route, but some great views along the way and some interesting sculptures too. The marble is quite famous and was even used at Versailles.

Back to ‘El Barrr’ for the rugby, where I had no idea what was happening. but with a giraffe of rosé to go at, what’s not to like? Karl is part time resident rugby ‘font of all knowledge’ and his opinion was being sought constantly by all the other supporters.
A few card games and learnt how to play Yahtzee (sort of ) – can’t remember any of it today! 😂

So, today, we set off around eleven and called at Pezenas for lunch. It wasn’t quite how we remembered it and we were a little worried about leaving the van due to boy racers doing handbrake turns in the carpark.

This afternoon, we de-toured through the Tarn Gorge…not really meaning to do the whole lot but there was a little confusion with who had put which route in! Pretty hair-raising in places, wondering if we’d get through the overhanging rocks without going inadvertently ‘open plan’, many hairpins and precipitous ledges but what spectacular scenery. Finally made it to Mende where we’ve collapsed in a big heap.
