What a grim day to wake up to! The greyest skies and heavy rain despite snow being forecast. Nothing for it but to drive, drive, drive!
Headed towards Rouen on the toll free route that goes through all the little villages – not a soul about in this weather. Lunch in an aire by the side of the road, then a complete change of plan as we headed to the town of Les Andelys, south east of Rouen.
Fortunately, the rain stopped for a little while and we were able to have a walk around Richard the Lionheart’s fortress – the Château Gaillard.
Although the dashboard said the temperature was 9°, it didn’t feel like it on top of the hill, high above the River Seine. The castle, built in 1197, is now a ruin as it was almost destroyed in 1603 although some of its 4 metre thick walls still remain intact. Closed today, otherwise we might have gone inside to see if it was any warmer. 🤣
Finished the day with at least five circuits of the same roads in Les Andelys looking for somewhere suitable to park. In the end, we had to drive on to the next village, Bernières-sur-Seine. Super quiet here, hopefully a peaceful night.
