Córdoba

Came further north today for a return trip to Córdoba. It’s such a beautiful old city with so much to see. Not much sunshine today though, and everything is still covered in sand up here. I’d read on the weather forecast that the air quality was very bad and we spent most of the afternoon with masks on as you could almost taste the sand in the air.
Got tickets for the Mezquita first, but it didn’t open until 4pm, so Guy took us on a tour of the little back streets until I began to think we were completely lost! Somehow, we came out at the huge Plaza de la Corredera – a striking 17th century arcaded square, painted green and orange.

By the time we’d had a coffee, it was already 4pm so we made our way back towards the city’s major monument – the fabulous Mezquita. This huge mosque, which is also part cathedral is completely awesome in the true sense of the word. You enter from a courtyard full of fountains and orange trees into a massive double arch filled space – it’s almost disorientating. Much moorish architecture with all the decorative mosaics and tiles coupled with 1293 marble columns and 280 chandeliers. It doesn’t really need all the cathedral stuff as well – it knocks you for six.

Had trouble getting the photographer to leave – I was frozen after an hour and thought it was time to get out into the warm sunshine. Trouble was, it wasn’t warm or sunny! Not sure what’s happened to Spain this year but sure we’re normally in shorts by now.

Wandered through the atmospheric Jewish quarter and then made our way back to the van, thinking we’ll come in again tomorrow morning. We are parked for free with several others next to the zoo. There’s a few strange animal noises from time to time, but I’m sure Guy will give them a run for their money later when he gets his Z’s in! 😂😴
