B5A3237D-8028-4BA7-A169-2DB04CF5783DWoke up to yet more rain and it hasn’t stopped all day. We drove to the tourist office in Rauland and asked about the moose. The lady in there was very knowledgeable as she is the one who takes people on moose safaris in the summer. We were given a map to follow and told the best places to look for them. She said that if we followed the route she could guarantee that the moose would’ve seen us, even if we didn’t see them! Also, there’s no real point to searching on foot as they’ll smell you first and run off.

We drove the whole route as slowly as possible but didn’t see a thing, other than some cows pretending to be moose. It filled a rainy day though, and we decided to try again at dusk. Bingo! Three sightings …we were so chuffed. The best pictures are of the first one which had just stepped into the road and then retreated when it saw us. We could see it’s ears swivelling as the camera clicked. They are HUGE, and so funny looking, with their tree trunk legs and long faces. With all the mist and greenery around them, they really do look like some kind of strange mythical woodland creature.

We saw the second one at some distance from the main road. He just stood staring at us but we couldn’t get any closer.

The third one leapt into the trees before I could even lift the camera up. We think they were all females as they didn’t have antlers – maybe that’s because they’re stuck to the outside walls of every cottage for miles around.
We feel so lucky to have seen these lovely creatures – it’s taken all day, but well worth it.
