Guy’s birthday today, so as a treat, just a couple of hours driving. 😉Thought we’d aim for Würzburg as we know it’s a nice place with plenty to do. The service stations along the way were all chock full of lorries and cars, then when we called at Lidl, it was closed. Bank Holiday! …on a Thursday 😮

Deciding there was no point trying to park by the river, we’ve joined about two hundred other white boxes in the ‘proper’ motorhome parking for €15.

Birthday boy decided he would rather get some fresh bread and have a Greek salad in the van than go out for lunch so that’s what we did. At this point, the hot sunshine turned into torrential rain. 🙄

Had to have a game of cards, but I didn’t let him win today like I usually do. Once the weather cleared up we walked up a thousand steps to the Festung Marienberg, which is part medieval fortress and part palace and apparently, the largest of its kind in Europe. We were expecting to have to pay, but it was totally free today, maybe because of the bank holiday. The whole complex was massive and it was definitely worth the walk up for the views over the old town and the river Main. We then discovered a lovely walk down through the grapevines, so rewarded ourselves with a glass of the local Franconian wine, which is top notch in my book.

Back to the van to dodge another thunderstorm, then out for dinner at the fabulous Weinstuben Juliusspital. The best meal we’ve ever had in Germany, with the main course centred around the much celebrated white asparagus which is in season at the moment.

As we got back to the van, there was a very loud bass thumping noise, so we went to investigate. It was some kind of really bad music festival – we decided it felt like we were parked next to a fairground.

Ensuring he would get a good night’s sleep, a certain person then continued to drink many more glasses of wine. Happy Birthday Guy! 😂🎂🍾🥂xx
