Göteborg …and Why We Didn’t Stay!

We’d asked at reception this morning if it would be alright to wash the motorhome using their hosepipe. ‘Of course’ came the reply, but with only one side completed, one of the caretaker chaps came past and said ‘it’s fine to wash your vehicle, but you can’t use soap’. Ah. So, it’s half washed and half rinsed …better than nothing.
Straight down the motorway then – such novelty – towards Göteborg.
We stopped on the outskirts of the city to visit Lidl. Immediate culture shock. Beggars sat outside, women sat on the pavement and inside, well, we couldn’t wait to get out. I picked up a courgette and was about to put it in a bag when an old man took it straight out of my hand! It didn’t feel like we were in Sweden and not one single person looked Swedish in there.
We then started looking for somewhere to park in the city. The Park4Night app that we use has reviews on it of places where people have stayed. It seemed that every single carpark had reports of break-ins, locks drilled out, stuff nicked etc. There’s been a massive amount of immigration here and it seems that sadly, crime has gone through the roof at the same time. All the reports said that the police could do very little about it.
To risk it or not? We did, but ran around the city at warp speed as we were worried that we’d be coming back to smashed windows. It’s a big place, very vibrant and quite nice in parts but we didn’t feel able to enjoy it.
Even 20 miles south, out on the coast, we’d found a lovely place to park. It felt very safe, but upon checking the reviews – more break ins!
We’ve driven a bit further down to a nice spot near a marina – no bad reports, so should be ok. Guy is now checking out the fastest possible route to Denmark 🇩🇰😁.
