Short drive south to Füssen this morning and found some out of the way parking up by a sports centre.
We wanted to walk up to the Marienbrücke bridge for a view of the Neuschwanstein Castle which was just a few kilometres away. There was a good shady path all the way to Hohenschwangau but that’s when we took the ‘path’ up through the woods instead of following the masses up the road. We hadn’t realised everyone was heading for the same place.
There was much cursing from me (it’s started early) as we scrambled up what looked like a dry waterfall only to arrive at the top in a sweaty mess to join the well dressed sensible people who’d walked up the road. Definitely Guy’s fault but any responsibility is denied as usual!

There were crowds of people everywhere – you can tell it’s August. The bridge itself had a massive queue- at least half an hours wait, but we’d put such effort in to get this far, there was no turning around.

Quite a few groups tried to walk straight up and jump the queue but the man on the gate was really on the ball and turned them around. Two people pushed in as we reached our turn and ignored Guy’s ‘angry eyes’ 👀 so they got dobbed in immediately 🤣 and sent back to the beginning by the super efficient German guard.

Spectacularly view from the bridge, but boy was it packed with people.

Walked back to see the castle itself then down via the road with ice cream served up complete with dead wasp 🐝
We couldn’t stay overnight in the parking, so set off towards the Fern Pass with a view of parking somewhere near the top. Easier said than done as the heavens opened and we were caught in a mega storm. Parked just off the road in a gravel area where the reviews say there’s a lot of road noise overnight – we can’t hear it at all as the rain is so loud on the roof!
