Got up late so decided to stay another day and see a bit more of the city. You can certainly walk your legs off here as we found out on our last trip and it hasn’t got any smaller!

Had a walk across the Margit Bridge first, to get a view of the Parliament building.
Then, about four miles along the river to the Central Market. It didn’t seem very central as it was so far away 😂 Hoped to get something to eat there but didn’t really fancy what was on offer, so we ended up at a cafe outside which was nice as the sun was actually quite warm today.

Walking back we had a look at the beautiful Dohàny Street Synagogue. Having just seen the ‘shoes’ memorial again that marks where the Jews were ordered to remove their shoes before being shot by the Hungarian Militia on the banks of the Danube, it’s all quite sobering stuff.

Called into Szimpla Kert , one of Budapest’s iconic ruin bars. There are several bars inside this dilapidated, pre war building that is furnished with anything and everything…even half a car! Lots of graffiti and grubbiness – must be very atmospheric late at night. It was actually quite light and bright in the afternoon though, with loads of people like us, just gone in for a nosy!

The opera house was pretty lavish inside. Surprised they let us in in our scruffy walking boots! Needed coffee by this time and ended up in a very old fashioned place where we were told to sit down upstairs. It was like being in your Grandma’s front room. 🤣

Saw the Basilica on the way back, by which time, we were on the home straight. Nine miles = more than one glass of wine!
