Well, what a night that was in the quiet carpark at the shopping centre! So quiet, we kept hearing cars creeping in, so took it in turns to get up and look out of the window 🙄 In the cold light of day we realised people were just being considerate and creeping past slowly to go up the farm track at the back of us!
Very tired and grumpy this morning, we dragged ourselves into Sopron old town. It was a ‘must see’ place featuring no fewer than 240 listed buildings …it was worth the effort. The street layout was almost circular with alleyways running between the outer and inner circles. Beautiful Baroque buildings, ornate churches, cobbled streets and Sopron’s symbol – the Firewatch Tower. A good morning, all in all, made better by warmer weather and some bright sunshine.

After lunch we got on the motorway to Budapest and it literally rained insects along the way. I really thought it was rain at one point but the state of the van on arrival tells the truth!

Squeezed into the tiniest parking ever, having downloaded the app to make the gate open. Trouble was, it tried to close before we were through it!

Managed to get out on foot and dragged ourselves up to the City Park (as recommended by our good friends, the Martinscrofts). We missed all of this amazing stuff last time we were here as we had to rush back to check on Rufus who was getting on a bit by then.

First stop, Heroes Square, with its huge statues of conquerors and rearing horses, then into the park itself. The old buildings all around are so beautiful, although we didn’t try the Széchenyi Baths, they’re supposed to be the hottest in the city.

The huge boating lake area had been drained of water, so I guess that wasn’t looking it’s best.

Finally, the Museum of Ethnography …or the outside bit anyway. A stunning cultural space featuring sweeping roof gardens, you can walk up for fantastic views of the surrounding area.

Phew! big day considering the lack of sleep. I think there’ll be much snoring by 10pm tonight. 😴🥱
