Up to Portugal’s highest peak today – Torre. We set off about 9am along the winding roads – at least they were tarmac all the way. We passed more burnt trees, houses, a car and even a tractor at one point. It seemed like the whole of the mountain range had been torched. Suddenly, we turned a corner and all was green again. We got to the top 1993mtrs – with a 7 metre tower on top to take it to 2000!🙄 It was a really clear day and we could see for miles. Rufus loved it …think he was on the trail of some unusual wildlife! Down the other side we headed for Manteigas, a whitewashed mountain village. Along the way the road was blocked with first cows, and then goats 🐐. After calling at the bank, we decided Manteigas didn’t have enough in it to keep us entertained for the afternoon so we continued driving along some very unusual routes all the way to Viseu. At one point, we got stuck in a little village with an old lady collecting her olives who decided to explain in detail which way we should go….unfortunately it was all Portuguese to us!! We kept saying we didn’t understand but she carried on saying it louder and louder for about 15 minutes, hoping she’d get through to our thick skulls eventually. She didn’t! We turned around, joined the motorway and paid the toll. Viseu started off a bit like Nottingham in the 70’s but with a nice church thing at the top of a hill. Then we walked down the back streets of the old town – really was like stepping back in time. Old fashioned toy shops, nylon overall shops, corset shops and lots of religious paraphernalia. Bought two coffees – last of the big spenders! (Pensioners now you know!)
