Today we drove north again to the Serra da Estrela mountains through what should have been some stunning scenery to what what billed as one of the best campsites in Portugal. What we found as we drove up the winding roads was mile upon mile of burnt countryside and houses. It just went on forever -we’d heard about fires in Portugal but this was far worse than anyone could imagine. A lot of the trees just looked sort of Autumnal from a distance, but when we got close up you could see they were all charred. As we reached the campsite things got blacker and even more burnt looking. We turned in to it to find it completely deserted. It looked like they were just starting to take some of the trees down and rebuild parts of the site. We drove about another ten miles or so to find the next campsite. It was open thankfully, but I think we may be the only people on it. Had hoped to get some washing done and finish drying out the carpet, but we were a bit late in the afternoon to start it and we don’t want to stay another day. Feel so sorry for the people round here – their view is of brown trees now and it still smells smokey. Took Rufus a walk by the river but it just looks all wrong everywhere. ☹️☹️☹️
