Dhimitsána

Rained all night and the gorge was full of cumulonimbus this morning – not looking very enticing for a walk down. We drove further up the road to Dhimitsána, a beautiful town spread across the side of a mountain in a triangular shape. Parked on the side of the road and then had a wander around the cobbled streets – the views must be amazing on a clear day.

On the way back, just as we got close to the van, we could here a dog really crying – I thought it was coming from one of the houses above, but we traced the noise to a skip in the street and sure enough, on top of the rubbish was a little black puppy. We couldn’t reach in far enough to get it and it was surrounded with flies and food rubbish. Ran back to the van – 100 yards to dump bags and bread and pick up a blanket to get it with. On our return, two minutes later, dog gone!! Vanished into thin air. Part of the skip was enclosed and we were terrified it had got stuck, but there was no bark or scuffling, so after twenty minutes we had to come to the conclusion that it had somehow got itself out after it saw us. It was so awful, I’m still not 100% convinced, but we couldn’t climb into what was effectively a static dustbin lorry.

Decided to head back towards the coast in the hope of better weather, but it wasn’t to be. The drive was difficult to say the least. Many hairpin bends and tiny streets through villages full of parked cars and overhanging balconies.

We eventually landed at the port of Katakolo, a pretty little seaside town at first glance.

Apparently, cruise ships come here and there’s one due in the morning at 8am,when it will disgorge 2600 people into this tiny place. Think most will be heading for Olympia on coaches, but for those that stay, I would advise not walking up to the lighthouse, as Greek Steptoe’s junk yard is along the way and then a sewage works! 😂

😂Needless to say our afternoon walk wasn’t a very successful one – it ended with a full on thunderstorm!
