Seems to me, if you get up half an hour later at this time of year, the day is gone in the blink of an eye!
We started the day with a long walk through the park to see the Zeppelintribüne where Hitler would address the rally. The whole area is absolutely massive and you can actually stand on the podium – it’s a weird feeling. It’s a crumbling concrete structure but all around there are information boards about how they are going to preserve it for education purposes. 😬 I’m not sure if they should blow the whole thing up as I reckon Hitler would probably be quite pleased to know we’re all gawping at his big ideas ninety odd years later! The weirdest thing was looking through the locked toilet doors – the ceilings look like gold mosaic.

Enough of that. Next, we called at Lidl – mainly to see if they had any of the Franconian white wine in flat bottles – they did, so we’ve stocked up 🤣 Then, a motorhome supplies shop for some silicon. By this time it’s about 1:30pm. It was a toss up between Heidelberg or Rothenburg.
Rothenburg won as it was closer and more chance of seeing a bit of sunshine once the fog lifted.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber has the appearance of being one of the most perfectly preserved medieval walled towns in existence and it couldn’t look more German if it tried. It’s both amazing and beautiful. Surprisingly, it was heavily bombed in 1945 but the damage was quickly repaired and any reconstruction must have been done very sympathetically.

The town is laid out in the shape of a cross and there are archways, churches and clocks everywhere you look. We had a walk around the walls again as they run for quite a long way and give great views of all the crooked rooftops. Some of the little shops were closed, but I think this place is popular all year round and the many Christmas shops must make an absolute fortune. With baubles starting at €25 – we’d have to swap our tree for a twig!

Oh, I forgot to mention Guy’s favourite bit – a giant bubble blowing teddy bear above a shop doorway. 🤣
