Brrr…a bit nippy this morning when we set off through the fog towards Heidelberg. We hit a massive traffic jam for the first time in ages. Some roadworks added about 40 minutes to the journey.
We’d decided to stop at Heidelberg as I remembered it as a lovely place when we last came in 2018, but it was summer and overrun with tour buses, so I thought it would be quieter at this time of year. We could have done with some sunshine though 😉
We parked at the back of the old town and after scrutinising the parking meter, I decided we were ok to park and used an app to pay.
As we got out, a man came to tell us we couldn’t park there as it was market day! He said he’d have to give us a ticket, but we could still go and have a walk around and not to worry about it. He placed said ticket under the wiper and I didn’t mention the fact that we normally chuck them in the bin anyway. 🤣…Unless in the UK of course.

We walked through the Main Street to the old town and then up a very steep cobbled path to the castle.

Guy remembered that one of the towers had been blasted by the French despite being metres thick. You can still see the section that’s been separated as it has slid down towards the moat.

There are great views from the terraces over the River Neckar and its bridges. Once we’d got our breath back, we made our way down to the Alte Brücke (old bridge), then walked back into the town.
Thought we’d get a few more miles done as it was only three o clock ish, so we carried on across the motorways and ended up at our old favourite the Völklinger Hütte.
We only stopped to fill up with water but suddenly realised that we can park here too and big bonus when the data is running out – free WiFi!
