Gone upmarket for my birthday! I put a dress on so Guy couldn’t make me do any cliff faces.
We drove to a campsite just outside Rapallo, then after strict instructions from the campsite owner, we went and stood at the wrong bus stop for half an hour. Found the right one, got on bus, only to find we should have bought a ticket in the tobacconists – but of course! Got off bus – walked and walked but didn’t find another tobacconists open. Soon we arrived in our first destination, Santa Margherita, anyway.
What an area this is – so beautiful, grand villas, plants, flowers, palm trees, but very expensive. A lot of places were closed – don’t know if it’s just end of the season, covid, or the amber weather warning. Had lunch and an Aperol, which I promptly spilt down my dress 😂!
Then we found tobacconists, got tickets and bus to Portofino.
Another beautiful harbour, usually full of the rich and not so famous. It was much smaller than we thought though. Walked up to the lighthouse, then paid €11 for two coffees …but the toilets were lovely! 🙄
At this point the heavens truly opened and everyone ran for cover. We tried to get the bus back to Santa Margherita but they were trying to put 60 people on a bus that held 40! We walked away and waited for the next one which was empty.

Back in Santa Margherita, we returned to the same restaurant (Molo 10)for dinner as it was so good. We were the only customers – the owner said it was due to the weather warning not Covid. Rolled out three courses later, got on a bus with a driver who had definitely had more wine than me …what a nutter! We couldn’t even stand up to press the bell when it was our stop as he was so hell bent on banking it over on the next corner. Wasn’t sick though – that’s a birthday result! 😬
