After a clear night – see stars, we woke up to heavy rain and grey skies so we drove away from them. Had to go a long way around the mountains to get to the other side where the weather is still hot.
First towards Martigny where everything started to look French and then back east, along the valley towards Visp. We stopped at Sion and had a walk round. It was a lovely place with a castle and a chateau at the top of the hill. The main street was bustling with people eating and drinking. We stood and watched a brilliant live band for a few minutes until it got too busy.

Zermatt was much further away than we thought and it seemed to take us ages to get anywhere near as the roads were so windy. All the parking in nearby Täsch was full, so we ended up further out at a place called Randa. It was already 3:30 but we decided to get the train straight away as it was a clear, sunny day so best chance to see the Matterhorn in all its glory! At the train station, I stopped to tie my boot lace so Guy went in and asked for the “Zwei billets fur Zermatt bitte” ….I remained smug in the knowledge that I could’ve also asked for a pencil sharpener but unfortunately, that’s were it ends!
Zermatt seemed huge compared to 28 years ago. It was rammed with people and there was even a marathon taking place! We marched quickly through the town and up the path into the hills on the other side. We were rewarded with fab views of the iconic mountain – Guy has so many photos he doesn’t know where to start!
