St Nicholas

Very cold this morning – a right old shock to the system! Straight up the motorway towards Sofia with a bit of A road thrown in through a gorge. Nice that they put little bollards down the middle of the road to stop any crazy overtaking. Also lots of signs near lay-bys telling you to pull over and let traffic past …pro-active punch up prevention!

We drove into the first car park in the city, but it was pretty rammed, so straight back out again. Fortunately, the next one had space – just! At about £1 an hour, a guarded parking space in the middle of Sofia seemed like a bargain.

We set off to have a look at the cathedral, about 25 minutes walk away. It seemed so weird to be walking quite fast with a purpose..we haven’t been able to walk anywhere at pace in Greece as it was just too hot!

We came first to the beautiful Russian Orthodox Church of St Nicholas – really colourful both inside and out.

The huge, golden dome topped, St Alexander Nevsky cathedral was just a bit further up the road. Similar inside, but definitely one of Sofia’s landmarks.

On the way back towards the car park I saw a barber in an empty shop, twiddling his thumbs, so Guy went in and got a quick short back n sides for about £7!! Bargain!

Then we called at Lidl as it was right next to parking. Obviously bought too much forgetting we had to carry it in bags, not trolley, across the road to the motorhome 😬 Felt the need to stock up before we hit Serbia though.

Guy somehow managed to negotiate the city’s rush hour traffic and we’re now parked in the little town of Dragoman up by the Serbian border. There may be radio silence for a while as we don’t want to bankrupt ourselves using data outside the EU. Spent the evening doing retro route planning with a proper map that you can’t stretch. I’m in charge of following the green dots tomorrow – see you on the other side!
