It’s a surprisingly short distance coast to coast across the top of Greece. I suppose we were already half way across at Metéora.
Not a lot to see en route other than balls of fluffy cotton in all the verges – I’m not sure if I’ve seen cotton fields before but didn’t expect it in Greece for some reason. The processing plant was struggling to keep hold of it – looks like half the crop just blows away!
When we reached the other coast near Mt Olympus, we’d had the idea of parking up at a beach to eek out a couple more days of sunshine and swimming.
The sun was out, the beach deserted, but there was a very cool wind blowing even though it was still 20 degrees.
Not quite warm enough to sit around. We had lunch, then got on the motorway to Thessaloniki and then on to the Bulgarian border.

A quick but chaotic crossing this time, unlike the poor lorry drivers who look like they’ll be there for weeks.

We made our way to the little town of Melnik …only because we’d had some nice red wine from there.
Neither of our phones had any signal, which was weird.
The town is quite pretty, set among sandstone pyramid shaped rocks. There are a few little wine shops but feels a bit like it’ll be tourist price. Hardly anyone around – felt like we stuck out like a sore thumb!

Back at the van we have somehow managed to get the phones to connect to a Bulgarian network and have now got the familiar ‘Welcome to Bulgaria’ text. Suddenly it doesn’t seem quite so remote!
